Greg S; Arrested at the Esplanade

Name: Greg S.
Age: 24
Occupation: Construction and renovations

Purpose of Attendance

I went to the rally in order to protest my extreme dissatisfaction with global governance, the pillaging of the poor to further the interests of the elite.  I was protesting injustice. It later turned into a protest saying that we have a right to protest.

Account

Saturday

I was involved in the protest which ended in front of the Novotel Hotel on the Esplanade.  We were peacefully marching through the streets chanting and singing, At one point, we were close to the security fence but did not want a confrontation, so we moved on to the Novotel Hotel. Once there we sat down in the street and continued to chant and sing.  It was around 8:30 PM. After 5 minutes or so, a line of police dressed in riot gear, including gas masks, appeared in front of us and sealed off that end of the street. Continue reading

Andrew S; Beaten and Arrested

Name: Andrew S.
Age: 27
Occupation: Software Architect

Purpose of Attendance

I went to the area to see what was happening in person but ended up unwillingly caught up in the action defending my rights.

Account

I believe the escalation was primarily caused by the police force on Sunday. While the events on Saturday were certainly disturbing, it does not grant police the right to randomly grab people and assault them or to make mass arrests. The gathering was extremely peaceful, and the place where I was actually contained no protesters just onlookers with cameras.

Sunday

I live just a few blocks from Queens St and Spadina and came up there on bicycle. I ended up east of Spadina on the “outside” of the protesters that were getting boxed in at the intersection. The crowd was almost all onlookers just taking photos. Continue reading

Purpose of Attendance

To ensure protection of civil rights, as well as voice my opinion on a number of different foreign trade & labor affairs, health care issues and human rights issues.

Account

Sunday

Around 3:00pm, I was walking down Mccaul Street, just past Queen St, headed to the Village by the Grange with my partner Raechel. I was among a crowd of 30 or so pedestrians along the street. An officer sitting in his vehicle proceeded to step out, and demanded that I “Put [my] hands on the car.” At this time, and in a very confused tone, I asked the officer if I was being arrested or detained, and on what ground he had the rights to search and detain me. Josh N; Harrassed and Searched

Name: Josh N.

Purpose of Attendance:

To show opposition to the massive funneling of public resources into the private sector in an attempt to save the financial and corporate sectors from their own profit driven system. Part of the aim of G20 meetings, in my view, is the continuation of this profit driven system at the expense of the civil society.

Account

Saturday

The main march against the G20 was put on by labour unions, women’s groups and other civil society organizations. Despite heavy rain it was estimated that around 20,000 people attended. The march started at Queen’s Park and then looped around Queen Street and Spadina, back to the park. There were hundreds of police in riot gear, on bikes, on horses and in vans and buses blocking all intersections. Continue reading
